“Dear Ai,
I’ve been in Vancouver almost a year. I feel safe living here, but lately I see news on TV that women are targeted around Skytrain stations. Are there any tips that I can do to avoid being troubled?” Michiru – Japan

“Hi Michiru. Vancouver is one of the safest cities in the world. But people need to take care of their safety wherever they go. I will share my tips with you.

1. Do not plug both your ears with head phones. When you listen to the music, you lose your ability of sensitivity. Many criminals come and attack from behind. If you would like to listen to music, you choose safe place in public.

2. If you take Skytrain, make sure you stand and wait inside the designated waiting area, marked by yellow lines. This area is watched by security constantly. If you are on the Skytrain, you can use the speaker phone and the silent alarm to get some help. More information:

3. When you take a public bus, make sure you sit where the bus driver can see you. If you are in trouble, it is easier to ask for help if you sit at front.

4. When you are walking, don’t walk in the same direction that cars are going. If you feel like you are followed, cross the street and walk on the other side. It is difficult for a car to turn around.

5. If you are followed, contact your homestay and friends immediately. Tell them where you are and arrange for them to pick you up. Walk on busier streets and enter the nearest convenience store, restaurant or shops and ask for help.
